Staying Motivated During Isolation

Staying motivated to study from home has become a lot harder recently thanks to the dreaded ‘C’ word, but there are many ways to stay motivated and keep procrastination at bay during these trying times. 

Create a separate study area:

When studying from home, it can be difficult to separate your relaxing space from your study space so try and keep an area of your home set aside specifically for study- be it a desk in your bedroom or the dining room table. Keeping an area in your home especially for studying purposes will help keep your mind off of your work when you want to relax. However, if you do have to study in your bed try using a tray to keep your work on, as a portable study space, so it’s easy to remove when it’s time to sleep. 

Setting up your study space:

It may take you a while to figure out what works for you, but it’s okay to try a few things before you settle on the perfect study space. If you’re struggling to stay focused in your study area try these simple things:

·       Put your phone in a separate room so you aren’t tempted to check Instagram instead of studying.

·       Listen to music- I recommend listening to music without lyrics. Try the ‘Jazz Vibes’ playlist on Spotify, it’s perfect for studying!

·       Keep some healthy snacks and a drink by your side. This way you won’t feel the need to get up in search for food- though remember to take breaks for mealtimes.

·       Open a window and light your favourite candle (fresh air and certain smells can help the brain retain information and stay focused for longer periods of time).

Set an alarm for study time:

Setting an alarm for an hour or even twenty minutes is the perfect way to keep you motivated to study. Instead of giving you an ambiguous study time, setting an alarm allows you to monitor how long you are working for and helps you feel accomplished when you manage to study until your alarm goes off. 

Take breaks:

Never underestimate the power of taking breaks- they help your brain retain information and will stop you from burning out. After you’ve studied for a set amount of time, take a break. Remember not to feel guilty when you aren’t studying, taking breaks is important for your mental health and will help you stay energised for your next study session. 

Reward yourself:

If you’re someone who tends to feel guilty for taking breaks instead of studying, try rewarding yourself once you’ve studied by filling your break time with something more fulfilling. Try using this time to focus on your hobbies, rather than binge watching Netflix (though this is also a more than acceptable way to fill your break time).

Remember you’re not alone:

It’s important at times like these to remember that we’re all in this together and that we can get through this! If you’re struggling to study alone, try setting up an online study session via Facetime or Discord with your classmates and friends. That way you can help each other stay motivated and you won’t feel quite as isolated.
