As a young white woman I am aware of and understand my privilege.
But instead of using my privilege to ignore racism and suppress people of colour, I am using my privilege to speak out against this great injustice our world is facing, and has faced for countless years before. I urge you to do the same.
If you stay quiet because you don’t want to get involved with politics, think. This isn’t just about politics. This is about basic human rights. The rights of people to feel safe in their country, regardless of the colour of their skin.
Don’t stay quiet because you feel like it isn’t your place to speak out or because it makes you uncomfortable. It IS your place and it SHOULD make you uncomfortable. What is happening is NOT right, so use your voice. Use your privilege. Use your platform, however big or small it may be.
Sign petitions. Donate where you can. Protest safely. Talk to your friends and family and as many people as you can to make them aware of what is going on in the world.
The colour of your skin may mean you are privileged but it does NOT make you superior. Stand with your brothers and sisters. Speak out against racism. USE YOUR PRIVILEGE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Below is a link to a very useful website with links to several petitions you can sign and organisations that you can donate to to show your support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
